Coming back from a nasty head cold.

It's a cold, wet day today with lots of steam rising from the vents in the neighborhood. Contrast that with the windswept rain and it has a quality of time moving slowly. Listened to the other BBC podcast on streetart today with the Brazilian artist Nunca. Interesting work.

Movement

I have been very busy in the studio. The new Beck album is on full rotation as is the latest from Deastro. I have been reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Marquez, as well as the writings of Eduardo Galeano. Also reading Electra, the play not the comic book. I would love to get over to the Met to see the Turner Exhibition – one of the greatest painters ever in my opinion. 

I am feeling rather partial to Samuel Beckett and Tom Waits at the moment. Also getting back to public musings.

The Daily Draw 5.14.08

I am juggling a thousand balls right now and doing these drawings seems to be the only thing that ground me.

It was very interesting today, as I did the last drawing of these, I noticed a young guys watching me, and realized after he got off the train that I had given a talk to his class 2 weeks ago.

The pollen has been very extreme the past week, making e feel tired even when I have had a good nights sleep. I noticed that it has really been heavy the past few summers, I am sure it is somehow an effect of climate change. But we had a good rain yesterday and all the pollen that was on the cars has been removed, everything looks so alive.

Back to the grindstone. 

Had the stomach flu for the past 4 days. 

I noticed something really interesting today on the train. At least 50 percent of the people around me were wearing Oxford shirts, opened at the collar with a medium weight scarf wrapped loosely on the outside of their coats. 

There was something about this repetition that I found extremely interesting.

On a note about the flu, I had a most extraordinary experience during it that I can say I have never encountered before. I had a bout of sleep paralysis. I woke from a dream that I was being choked on a subway car seat(see it does tie into subway drawing somewhat), this black shape I assume was an arm came from behind and moved across my throat. I woke to find I was back in my room, my eyes open, but I could not move anything except my eyes for about 30 seconds. It was terrifying as I literally had to hurl my body up to regain control. But it was fascinating for these exact reasons, the disconnect that can occur between mind and body.

It is interesting to draw people once they become aware of you but at the same time feign ignorance. The shifting of the posture becomes stiffer with occasional flashes of the eyes acknowledging that you've been caught.

People seemed a little slower on the trains today, you could really sense the cold settling in to people's bones. I knew sitting down that it would be interesting to focus on hands today, they really say so much.

I generally draw on the subway anyways, but as a motivation I am going to post a drawing daily. Perhaps some notes, just a little insight into the process, etc.

So this was a woman reading on the subway. I was really struck by her mouth and the way that it related to her nose, this strong vertical against this collapsing horizontal.
